Here at Amplify, we know taglines. We’re the type who get more excited for commercial breaks than primetime premiers. We may not be able to tell you who won the Super Bowl, but we’ll spend hours in front of the water cooler arguing over who had the best ad.
Your tagline says a lot about you. It’s your first impression on new customers, and oftentimes, it’s the first thing they remember about your company. By writing a tagline that really resonates with your audience, you can reinforce your key positioning anytime a customer hears your name.
So, what are the keys to writing a great tagline? The secrets of copywriting that no marketing agency dare disclose? It’s simple—the perfect tagline should:
- Be short and sweet—ideally 6 words or less
- Speak directly to your audience—ideally with active language
- Demonstrate the benefits of your company or product
- Tell a story, show your personality, and showcase your uniqueness
Let’s take a look at a few of our favorite tagline examples.
Setting the Tone. Since 1958.
Tagline Example: Universal Audio—Company Tagline
Universal Audio has a long history of creating innovative audio technology. Since Bill Putnam founded the company back in 1958, UA has been creating iconic signal processors—many of which are still used in studios to this day.
Not only is this tagline short and sweet at just five words, it demonstrates the benefits of UA equipment. With a clever play on words, “setting the tone” establishes UA’s legacy of creating industry-leading equipment for decades, while speaking directly to music makers.
Small footprint. Big sound.
Tagline Example: Blue—Yeti Nano Launch Tagline
The Blue Yeti microphone is the #1 best-selling USB mic in the world. In 2018, Blue released an updated, small-scale version of the Yeti called the Yeti Nano. Ideal for streamers, YouTubers and modern content creators, the Yeti Nano delivers superb sound quality in a compact package.
This tagline expresses the two main benefits of Yeti Nano in just four words. By combining two contrasting thoughts—small and big—Blue demonstrates how impressive it is that Yeti Nano is able to create such high-quality recordings considering its small size.
Authentic, From Head to Tone
Tagline Example: Line 6—Helix Series Tagline
Line 6 has been perfecting the art of digital guitar modeling since they were founded in 1996. In 2015, they released the Helix series—a collection of next-generation guitar processors capable of digitally simulating amp heads, cabs, mics, and effects with accuracy and precision.
This tagline speaks directly to guitar players while simultaneously implying the key benefit of Helix processors—authentic amp emulation for creating great guitar tones.
Shave Time. Shave Money.
Tagline Example: Dollar Shave Club—Company Tagline
Now let’s move outside the MI/audio industry. Dollar Shave Club delivers personal grooming products to customers by mail for just $1 each month. The company found success after their very first YouTube video became an overnight viral sensation. Dollar Shave Club racked up 12,000 customers in less than 48 hours—now that number has climbed over three million.
Each package from Dollar Shave Club proudly displays the company tagline—Shave Time. Shave Money. This tagline hits a lot of points—it’s short and sweet with only four words, it shows their personality by utilizing humor with a clever play on words, and it demonstrates their key benefit of saving time and money.
1,000 songs in your pocket.
Tagline Example: Apple—iPod Launch
And finally, we arrive at possibly the finest tagline of the tech generation.
Instead of focusing on the technology or specs of the device, Apple distilled the iPod into a single benefit that everyone could understand. At the time, portable media players were limited by the storage space of the medium—just as cassettes and CDs were. This tagline demonstrates the freedom iPod gives you by telling a story in just five words.
